Non-dependants

If someone aged 18 or over lives with you, such as a son or daughter, then this may affect the amount of benefit you receive.

In some cases we must make a deduction, which is fixed by central Government, that is intended to reflect the fact that any non-dependant will be making a contribution towards household expenses.

Amounts vary depending on circumstances and some examples from 2012/13 and 2013/14 are shown below:

 *Under Hertsmere's Council Tax Support scheme for 2013/14, claimants who are of pensionable age, lone parents which a child under the age of 5 and claimants where they or a member of their family are deemed 'disabled' are considered 'protected' and will be subject to a different level of non-dependant deduction from their Council Tax support from those claimants who are not 'protected'.
