Non-dependants

If someone aged 18 or over lives with you, such as a son or daughter, then this may affect the amount of benefit you are entitled to. This person is called a non-dependant.

In some cases a deduction is made that is intended to reflect the fact that any non-dependant will be making a contribution towards household expenses. Amounts vary depending on circumstances.

The deduction rates for this financial year are shown in the tables below:

 Aged 18 or over and in receipt of Main Phase Income Related Employment Support Allowance.

 Aged 18 or over and in receipt of Contribution Based Job Seekers Allowance or Contribution Based Employment Support Allowance (any phase) 

 £14.15 per week

Aged 18 or over and working more than 16 hours a week or more with a gross weekly income less than £128 per week.

 £14.15 per week

Aged 18 or over and working more than 16 hours a week or more with a gross weekly income between £128 and £188.00 per week.

£32.45 per week 

 Aged 18 or over and working more than 16 hours a week or more with a gross weekly income between £188 and £245 per week.

£44.55 per week 

Aged 18 or over and working more than 16 hours a week or more with a gross weekly income between £245 and £326 per week.

£72.95 per week 

Aged 18 or over and working more than 16 hours a week or more with a gross weekly income between £326 and £406 per week.

£83.05 per week 

Aged 18 or over and working more than 16 hours a week or more with a gross weekly income more than £406 per week.

 £91.15 per week

Not in paid work or in receipt of Income Support, Employment Support Allowance or Job Seekers Allowance.

 £14.15 per week

In receipt of Pension Credit (Guaranteed or Savings Credit)

 None

Student over the age of 18 studying a full-time course (as defined by the relevant college or university).

 None

There are also non-dependant deductions for Council Tax Support awards which can be found in the Council Tax Support scheme for 2014/15.
