Zoo licensing

Last Modified February 14, 2013

We work in close partnership with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on all aspects of zoo licensing.

The licensing of zoos is a specialist field and the regulations are complex. If you are thinking of setting up a zoo, it is recommended you contact a specialist officer for advice and guidance.

We cannot consider an application unless at least two months notice has been given, plus details must be published in a local and national newspaper, and a notice placed at the site. The current fee for a zoo licence is £4,300, plus veterinary fees.

We must consult the police, fire authority, a governing body of any national institute concerned with zoos, and adjoining authorities if the zoo overlaps another authority, as well as anyone wishing to object.

Welcome to Hertsmere Borough Council’s new website. In February this website will replace the existing www.hertsmere.gov.uk site as the best place to find information about Hertsmere and the services it offers.

Until then, you can explore the website by using this experimental trial (‘beta’) version.

PLEASE BE AWARE – this is a test website. It may contain inaccuracies or be misleading and links may not work. You should not use this site to contact us. Our old website remains the official website for Hertsmere until the end of February.
