Prevent

Prevent is about keeping people and communities safe from the threat of terrorism.

Prevent is one of the four elements of CONTEST, the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy. It aims to reduce the risk from terrorism, to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism, so that people can go about their lives freely and with confidence.

The three other elements of CONTEST are:

  • Pursue (to stop terrorists attacks),
  • Protect (to strengthen our protection against terrorists attacks) and
  • Prepare (when an attack occurs to mitigate its impact).

Prevent objectives are to:

  • Tackle the causes of radicalisation and respond to the ideological challenges of terrorism
  • Safeguard and support those most at risk of radicalisation through early intervention, identifying them and offering support
  • Enable those who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate

The Prevent strategy challenges extremism by:

  • Supporting people who are at risk of being drawn into terrorist or extremist activity.
  • Working with and supporting community groups and social enterprise projects that provide support to vulnerable people.
  • Working with faith groups and institutions to assist them in providing support and guidance to people who may be vulnerable.
  • Supporting local schools, local industry and partner agencies through engagement, advice and training.

Advice and how you can help

Every individual is different, but warning signs that someone is being radicalised for political, religious or ideological purposes could include:

  • Becoming more reserved with friends and family
  • Starting to support violence
  • Being un-interested in activities they previously liked to do
  • Researching extremist material on a computer or phone
  • Following or speaking to extremists on social media.

Concerns about a person being radicalised

If you are concerned about a loved one, friend or colleague try to have a conversation with them about their behaviour.  By talking openly and listening, you may be able to tackle their negative ideas and arguments.

If your child, relative or friend joins an extremist group

If you suspect your child, relative or friend has joined an extremist group, or plans to travel to join a group overseas, you should report the situation and take advice from the police immediately.

If you see something online

If you find material online promoting terrorism, extremist or radicalisation, you can report it anonymously to the Home Office.

Report your concerns

If you are concerned about someone in your community, please contact your local police force by dialling 101 and ask for the Prevent Team, or if you require urgent assistance please call 999.
