Household Waste Recycling Centres

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) are open to members of the public and operated by Hertfordshire County Council.

HWRCs are open all year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The following sites are in Hertsmere:

Allum Lane, Elstree, WD6 3LS
Open all year, Monday to Friday from 8am till 4pm and Saturday to Sunday between 9am and 4pm.

Cranborne Road, Potters Bar, EN6 3JN
Open daily:
1 April to 30 September: 8am to 6pm
1 October to 31 March: 8am to 4pm 

As well as general rubbish, a wide range of recyclables are accepted at the sites including:

  • Batteries (domestic and car) 
  • Books (for reuse) A cardboard bin at a Household Waste Recycling Centre
  • Cans
  • Cardboard 
  • Cartons
  • CDs/DVDs
  • Electrical items e.g. kettles, hair dryers, fairy lights
  • Foil
  • Fluorescent lighting tubes and low energy light bulbs
  • Fridges/freezers
  • Glass
  • Garden waste
  • Metals
  • Mobile phones
  • Oil (cooking and engine)
  • Ovens/hobs
  • Paper
  • Plasterboard
  • Plastic
  • Shoes
  • Textiles
  • Toner cartridges
  • TVs and monitors
  • Tyres
  • White goods e.g. washing machines
  • Wood
