Shops targeted in clean-up

As part of an ongoing campaign to clean up the back of Shenley Road shops, police, fire and council officers have inspected the area to check on issues such as graffiti and fly-tipping.
The team, made of up of representatives from Hertsmere Community Safety Partnership (CSP), conducted a visual audit on Tuesday 29 June. Graffiti was found in various places and a number of fly-tipped items, including sofa cushions and a car battery, were found dumped at the back of shops. Cars were found parked illegally - so the owners will be contacted to remove them - and one was blocking access to waste bins but has now been removed. A bin in plastic casing attached to a wooden-framed building was identified as a fire hazard and so a fire officer visited the owner to give advice.
Hertsmere's Community Payback team - local offenders on court orders to carry out unpaid work as a form of punishment - will be tasked to remove or paint over the graffiti and do some litter-picking and the council will clear the fly-tipped rubbish.
Councillor John Donne, Community Safety Portfolio Holder, said: "We inspect the backs of these shops regularly and take action on any issues to help improve the area for all those who use it. Unfortunately locations like this can often be a hot spot for problems which can affect people's feelings of safety.
"We hope our work will encourage local people to take pride in where they live and work."
Borehamwood Neighbourhood Sergeant Kate Chalmers said: "Graffiti and fly-tipping can have a negative impact on residents' quality of life and can attract further deterioration in the town.
"Anyone with any information about who is responsible for the graffiti or fly-tipping can contact police on 01707 354192 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
