Holocaust Memorial Day service - 27 January
04-Jan-2012 10:17:08
A special service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day will take place later this month at the Civic Offices in Borehamwood.
The Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Peter Knell, will be joined by councillors, local religious leaders and schoolchildren for the service and two-minute silence. The service will include readings, a short film and music from the Com.unity Choir.
Mayor Cllr Knell said: "Everyone is welcome to join us for the Holocaust Memorial Day service which is an important part of the council’s annual calendar.
"This year’s theme encourages us to ‘speak up’ and ‘speak out’ against injustice and hatred so we can help create a safer, better future."
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is commemorated internationally on 27 January each year. This date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
The idea behind HMD is to share the memory of the millions who have been murdered in the Holocaust and subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur in order to challenge hatred and persecution in the UK today.
This year’s theme asks everyone to think about the rights, responsibility and duty we all have to speak up when we see or hear something which we believe to be wrong.
All residents, communities and interested parties are welcome to attend the service on Friday 27 January, at 10.40am, in the council’s Chamber, Civic Offices, Elstree Way, Borehamwood.
