What is the Freedom of Information Act?

The principle of the Act is that information on any topic held by any public body should be available to the public, so that public bodies are more open, transparent and accountable.

When can information be requested under the Act?

The right of access came into effect on 1 January 2005.

Who can make a request for information?

Anyone, anywhere in the world can request information under the Act regardless of age, nationality or location.

What information does the Act cover?

All information held by a public authority in any format - fax, email, letters, minutes and so on may be disclosed. The Act is not limited to current information but also covers information on Council business from previous years.

What about information that relates to me?

The Freedom of Information Act does not allow for the release of information, which would be in breach of the Data Protection Act. Personal data will therefore continue to be protected by the Data Protection Act.

Who is responsible for overseeing the Act?

The Information Commissioner is responsible for overseeing both the Data Protection Act and Freedom of Information Act. Contact details are available on the contacts page.
