Hertsmere's Mayor

Peter Knell was born in Islington, North London in 1945 and went to Pooles Park Primary and Tollington Park Comprehensive School.

He is married to June and they have two children, a daughter, Yolande, who is the BBC’s Middle East Correspondent, and a son, Andrew, who is a “head hunter” in recruitment for the advertising trade.

Peter and his family moved to Potters Bar in 1967 and are still as much in love with the town today as they were then.

Peter spent 32 years in the fashion industry working for many of the top West End houses and the last 13 years in the trade as an executive director.

Since 2002, Peter has worked as a Private Hire Driver in Potters Bar and really enjoys meeting, speaking to and helping people every day.

Peter’s hobbies include bowling, driving, gardening and decorating.

Peter and June will be celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary this year.

The Deputy Mayor is Councillor Pat Strack.

Pat Strack was born in Wood Green, London.  She and her husband, Geoff, moved to Borehamwood in 1977 with their four children.  Their children were educated at Summerswood School and Nicholas Hawksmoor School (now known at Hertswood School).  Pat and Geoff have four grandchildren.

Pat taught at a Primary School in Haringey for over 25 years.  She completed her Masters degree in 1991.  She then moved from the classroom into an advisory role to help implement the National Curriculum and she set up an educational training and trading company in 1990 with a colleague.  Pat retired in 2004.

She has been a governor at Summerswood School for 22 years and has also done a lot of campaigning work in the community for CHOICE, WHOSE! and Patients’ Rights.  She is a member of the Elstree and Borehamwood Green Belt Society Committee, Chair of WHVG, Chair of the Friends of Aldenham Country Park and Secretary of Aldenham Country Park Trust Ltd and a committee member of HCL and director of Pair Dance. 

Any time that Pat has to herself, she likes to enjoy with her family and friends.  Her hobbies include travel, reading and sewing. 

Pat has been a Borough Councillor for five years and a Town Councillor for four years.  She was successfully re-elected to represent the Town Council again this year.

How to invite the mayor to your event

The Mayor of Hertsmere is invited to hundred of engagements every year.

Requests for the Mayor’s attendance should be sent at the earliest opportunity as the Mayor’s diary fills up very quickly.

We will respond to all requests within five working days of receipt.

The Mayor tries to fulfil as many engagements as possible and as such he/she may have to arrive at a later time or depart before the end of the function.  It is customary for the Mayor to be greeted on arrival.

If the Mayor cannot attend, the Deputy Mayor will be asked to go as the Mayor’s representative.  Once your engagement has been accepted, you will receive written confirmation.
