Join us on Holocaust Memorial Day
18-Jan-2010 16:47:38
A special service to mark Holocaust Memorial Day takes place later this month and residents are welcome to attend.
The Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Rosemary Gilligan, will be joined by councillors, council officers and local school children for the service and a two minute silence. The service will include readings, the showing of a short film and music from the Com.unity Choir.
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is on the same day each year - 27 January. This date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Each year, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust urges everyone in the UK to pause and reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behaviour are left unchecked. This year's theme is Legacy of Hope.
All residents, communities and interested parties are welcome to attend to remember victims of past tragedies. The service is at 10.40am on Wednesday 27 January at the Council Chamber, 1st Floor, Civic Offices, Elstree Way, Borehamwood, WD6 1WA.
