Winning designs rewarded

Christmas came early this year for three budding artists who created winning designs for the council’s festive card competition.

Each year Hertsmere Borough Council invites primary and junior schools in the borough to submit entries to its Christmas card competition. This year more than 300 designs were received and a ceremony was held at the Civic Offices in Borehamwood to congratulate the winners, who all came from Bushey schools.

Hertsmere’s Mayor Cllr Peter Knell and his wife June chose the winning designs. Cllr Knell said: "I really enjoyed looking through the designs. Some of them were very creative and you could tell that a lot of work and effort had gone into them. It was difficult to choose just three as there were so many good entries and I would like to thank all the children who made the effort to enter."

First prize went to Patrick Galvin, aged 10, from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, Bushey. Patrick designed a card with a recycling message, with a waste truck and Father Christmas doing his recycling.

Second prize went to Tania Cohen Dominguez, aged 8, from St Margaret’s School, Bushey. Tania drew Father Christmas and Rudolph with presents, set against a starry sky.

Third place went to Megan Fitzgerald, aged 10, from Hartsbourne Primary School, Bushey, who drew a nativity scene with lots of extras, including Rudolph, a penguin, a seal, a robin and three birds.

Each of the winners attended the celebration event with their families and were presented with certificates, gift cards and a pack of cards made up in their design to take home.

Patrick’s design will be used as the council’s official electronic card which will be sent to all partner agencies, while Tania’s design will be used by the Mayor as his official card this year.

Thanks go to all the children and schools who took time to enter the competition.
