Young people benefit from council cash

A group of local performers will have the opportunity to play with a piece of new equipment, thanks to a Bushey councillor.
Herts Inclusive Theatre has received a total of £212 from Hertsmere Borough Council’s Ward Improvement Initiative Scheme (WIIS) to buy a play parachute to be used during organised sessions with disabled children and young people.
Cllr Denise Kieran (Bushey St James) awarded the funding from her WIIS allocation. She said: “The theatre company gives young people the chance to participate in drama, dance and music exercises in an inclusive environment. The organisation runs a range of holiday workshops and after school sessions for young people aged between four and 19 years.
“I was pleased to be able to help the company buy a new parachute that is specially designed to be suitable for wheelchair users. Playing with the parachute will allow those attending sessions to develop their physical co-ordination as well as their team working skills.”
Herts Inclusive Theatre meets on a regular basis at The Bushey Centre, High Street, Bushey.
Elsewhere, Bushey Park councillors Linda Silver and David Collins allocated £225 each to the Fix and Trix event, organised by Hertfordshire Constabulary, which took place earlier this month at King George Recreation Ground.
The WIIS money helped fund mobile ramps at the temporary BMX park that was set up. The event was designed to help young people make sure their bicycles are safe to ride.
Local people can make a bid for cash to improve the area they live in by using WIIS, which allows each Hertsmere councillor to spend £1,000 to support local projects and schemes.
