It is with much sadness that Hertsmere Borough Council learned of the death of former Councillor Len Silverstone.

Len Silverstone

Mr Silverstone died on Thursday 15th June, following an illness.

Councillor Silverstone was elected to Hertsmere Borough Council in May 1995 and served until May 2006. He served on many Committees during this time, including the Services Committee (serving at various times as both Chairman and Vice-Chairman) and the Highways Sub-Committee (serving as Chairman for a period).

Councillor Silverstone was the Leader of the Labour Group on the Council between May 2003 and June 2004 and also served as the Council’s representative on various outside bodies.

Cllr Neil Payne, Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "I offer my deepest sympathy to Lorna Ward, herself a former Councillor in Hertsmere, and the remainder of Len Silverstone's family. I had the greatest admiration for Len as a Councillor and, despite his different political persuasion, always respected his sincerity and belief in democracy. I much enjoyed working with him when he was Leader of the Labour Group.

"Len was always going to have been missed at the Council, when he decided to retire to Scotland after stoically fighting illness. It is a great shame that his retirement has been cut short so cruelly."

Cllr Leon Reefe, Leader of the Labour Group, said: "The premature and untimely death of former Labour Councillor Len Silverstone has come as a real shock to all his former colleagues and friends.

"Len was a kind and gentle man with strong beliefs and those of us in the Hertsmere Labour Party together with his political opponents and the many residents that he helped are surely grateful to have known him."

Cllr Michael Colne, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said: "How sad it is that Len will not be able to enjoy his well earned retirement.  He will be greatly missed by all who knew him."
