Reward an unsung hero

Do you know of someone who works tirelessly for the community? Perhaps a neighbour has turned their hand to a heroic act, or a friend is a dedicated volunteer. If so why not nominate them for a civic award?

Anyone can nominate someone else for a civic award, but the nominee must be a resident of Hertsmere.

They need to have made a significant contribution to the lives of the residents of Hertsmere either with one major contribution or with a lifetime of work. Awards are also considered for residents for a specific single action of bravery or courage.

Previously awards have been given to a young lad who rescued his mum and a friend from a burning flat; a couple who had dedicated themselves to sporting clubs; a super-devoted foster-mum and a senior citizen campaigner.

A judging panel, including the Mayor Cllr Sandra Parnell, then meets to determine who receives the awards and recipients are then invited to a special dinner and ceremony, to be held next year, where they are presented with a certificate of recognition.

Cllr Parnell said: "These awards are all about recognising the fantastic work that members of the community carry out. They are our unsung heroes and it is an ideal opportunity to give them the public thanks that they deserve. I really hope that people take the time to nominate someone from their community and give us all a chance to show our appreciation."

The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 12 November.
