Youngest sailor to be awarded for achievement

The youngest person to sail the Atlantic single-handed is to be recognised for his achievements at Full Council on Wednesday 21 February.

Michael Perham, aged 14, from Potters Bar spent six weeks at sea during the 3,500 mile voyage from Gibraltar to Antigua. Michael set off in his boat 'Cheeky Monkey' on 18 November 2006 and ended his journey when he sailed in to Antigua on Wednesday 3 January.

Mayor Cllr Martin Heywood, who has invited Michael in to the council, said: "It is an amazing achievement and shows what young people can accomplish. Michael is a true inspiration to other young people - it highlights to us all that we can achieve our goals with commitment and bravery. I wanted to meet Michael personally to congratulate him and recognise his amazing voyage."

Michael's spokesman Kizzi Nkwocha, said: "After completing his crossing Michael became the most famous teenager in the world. He's hoping to write a book about his accomplishment which will act as an inspiration for kids everywhere."

The presentation will take place at 7.30pm in the Council Chamber, where Michael will be presented with an engraved glass trophy.
