Hundreds of school children will benefit from a day of free activities being organised by Hertsmere Borough Council in a bid to raise awareness of environmental health matters.

All local primary schools in Borehamwood have been invited to attend an
environmental fair and find out more about environmental health topics with
particular focus on safety in the home at Christmas, healthy eating and
fitness. The fair encourages active participation on health issues and will
include: pest control and dog awareness, pollution, food safety, recycling,
energy efficiency, and health and safety.

There will also be a selection of birds of prey to see and hold with
information emphasising the importance of good hygiene when handling
creatures.

As in previous years school children will have the opportunity of
shouting/screaming as loud as they can in a specially designed ‘noise booth’
and our officers will measure their noise levels compared to traffic,
aircraft and other noise sources. This is a very popular activity and
children are awarded a certificate for their efforts.

There will also be a selection of external exhibitors to make it more fun
and these will include the School Nurses/Health Visitors, Fire Brigade, Road
Safety and Police officers. There will be lots of other fun activities,
games, and quizzes and prizes and freebies to give away and competitions to
enter.

Yvette Statham, event organiser, said: “Local companies have been very
generous in giving us vouchers to offer as competition prizes, some of which
include Willows Farm, Pizza Hut and Tesco. Costco is donating fruit for us
to hand out to the visiting children.”

The event will take place at the Borehamwood Village Hall, Shenley Road on
Friday 8 December between 10am and 4pm.
