Dog warden service

The dog warden can help you if you lose your dog and generally prevents stray dogs from being a danger or nuisance.

The dog warden deals primarily with stray and dangerous dogs, monitoring and preventing dog fouling and providing talks for schools.

Stray dogs

Since April 2008, the council has had sole responsibility for dealing with stray dogs. We can help you if you find a stray dog and if you have lost your dog.

Dog fouling

Please ensure you clean up and dispose of any mess your dogs makes. There are dog litter bins provided in areas frequented by dog walkers. If you fail to do so you may be served a fixed penalty notice.

The dog warden will also regularly patrol areas covered by dog related by-laws and put up anti-dog-fouling stickers where appropriate.

Dangerous dogs

Hertsmere Borough Council has sole responsiblity for dealing with stray dogs, however, if necessary the police may intervene. Hertfordshire Police can be contacted on 0845 330 0222 at any time.

If you experience a dog that is a danger to other animals (including other dogs) and / or to people in any location then one should contact the police. If the nuisance dog is not causing a serious threat then our Animal Warden can visit the owner of the dog.  A record of all visits made by the Animal Warden, advice that has been given and the nature of the original complaint together with any information provided by the subject of the complaint is kept by Hertsmere Borough Council.

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 Section 1 certain types of dogs are prohibited in this Country (Pitbull, Dogo Arentino, Fila Braziliero and Japanese Tosa).  Owning or keeping a dog of any of these types is a criminal offence and must be reported directly to the police.

School talks

Part of our job is educational. Primary schools in the vicinity can arrange for a Dog Warden to visit and talk to pupils about all aspects of responsible dog ownership.

If you are a teacher at a school in the Hertsmere area,  you can e-mail us for further details.

If you have any questions or complaints, please contact the Dog Warden on 020 8207 7435 or email environmental.health@hertsmere.gov.uk.
