Scores on the doors

Scores on the doors is a scheme to improve food hygiene in local restaurants, pubs and takeaways in Hertsmere.

Hertsmere Borough Council participates in a widely publicised scheme called 'Scores on the Doors'.

What is Scores on the Doors?

It is a scheme aimed at improving food hygiene standards in the borough and also to give the public a more informed choice about where to eat based on food safety.

How does it work?

Certain food businesses such as restaurant, takeaways, cafes, pubs, clubs etc. receive a food hygiene inspection by an environmental health officer (EHO) and awarded anywhere between 0 (poor) - 5 (excellent) stars. The rating system focuses on hygiene, safety, structural condition and confidence in management.

Only those businesses scoring one or more stars receive a certificate. This can then be used to inform customers of hygiene and safety standards. It is voluntary for owners to display their certificates, however if they wish to do so then it must be visible from outside the premises, i.e. on the front door or window.

As we continue to operate the scheme, Hertsmere Borough Council publish the scores on this webpage. The list of scores will be updated on a monthly basis and may help when deciding where to eat.

General disclaimer

The hygiene rating given to premises on this website has been based on the latest Primary Inspection carried out and as such represents the situation as found by the officer at the time of that inspection. Therefore the score may not be representative of the overall, long-term food hygiene standards of the business and should not be relied upon as a guide to food safety or food quality.
