All the fun of the fayre

Hundreds of primary school children from Borehamwood enjoyed a festive fayre today which was aimed at raising awareness of environmental health issues.

The annual Christmas Fayre, organised by the council, took place at the Civic Offices and saw more than 350 children visit to learn about a range of environmental and health issues such as dog and pest control, noise and air pollution, food safety and hygiene, health and safety, recycling, energy efficiency and healthy eating. A variety of interactive stands were set up to allow the children to ‘learn by doing' and council officers were on hand to help them get the most out of the day.  Activities included pupils shouting as loud as they could in a booth so the noise could be measured in decibels and handling stick insects and washing their hands afterwards.

Hertsmere’s Mayor, Councillor Peter Knell, was also there to chat to children and share the experience, and a special appearance was made by Father Christmas!

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "The fayre is an annual tradition and has been running for 16 years now.  We always have great feedback from pupils and teachers and this year has been no different. Children had fun and learnt at the same time by taking part in the various interactive exercises."

Other local services showcased their work at the fayre including the police and fire service, St John's Ambulance and Hertsmere Leisure.

Thanks go to a number of businesses for donating prizes for competitions during the day including Costco, Halfords, Morrisons, Tesco, McDonald's, McVitie's, Pizza Hut, Willows Farm and Whitworths.
