Having already cleared an area of rubbish at the back of shops and flats 29 to 59, environmental health and street scene officers from Hertsmere Borough Council have focused their attention to another area behind businesses and flats which has become a magnet for flytipping.

The service road that runs along the back of numbers 20 to 38 has been cleared of all rubbish including a bed, mattresses and a TV which had all been dumped there.  In addition, a new waste collection arrangement has been put in place to keep the area clean and deter further flytipping.

Alex Holloway, Waste and Street Scene Operations Manager, explained: "The area is a hot spot for flytipping so we have introduced some measures which will hopefully address this problem and improve the area for all those who use it.

"We have asked the occupants of the flats to put their waste in large bins instead of leaving sacks on their balconies and have made enquires with all the businesses to make sure they are getting rid of their trade waste appropriately."

All businesses must have a trade waste contract by law.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "Flytipping is an eyesore and can encourage other environmental crimes so we will be monitoring the area closely and will take action against anyone found to be dumping rubbish there.

"We hope our work will encourage local people to take pride in where they live and work."
