Fingers crossed for Green Flag Awards

Judges from the Green Flag Award scheme have visited five of the borough's parks to assess their quality.

Aberford Park in Borehamwood, King George Recreation Ground in Bushey and Oakmere Park and Parkfield in Potters Bar have been submitted for a Green Flag Award, the national standard for quality parks and green spaces.  And for the first time, Fishers Field Nature Reserve in Bushey has been put forward for a Green Pennant Award which recognises high quality green spaces that are managed by voluntary and community groups.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder with responsibility for parks, said: "Our parks officers, ground maintenance team at John O'Conner and friends groups work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure our parks and open spaces are clean, safe and welcoming.

"We have some truly wonderful green spaces in the borough which are free and offer something for everyone including play areas, outdoor gyms, skate parks, cafes and public toilets, wildlife and beautiful lakes and simply are lovely places to visit and relax in.

"Our fingers are crossed for all the parks we've submitted this year and thanks go to everyone involved especially to those who volunteer their time."

King George Recreation Ground received its tenth Green Flag last year while Aberford Park was awarded for the first time.  Oakmere Park received a flag from 2002 to 2007 and Parkfield is being submitted for the second time.

Awards are due to be announced by the beginning of July.
