Recycle on the go

New recycling litter bins are being installed along high streets in Bushey and Potters Bar so that residents and visitors can recycle their waste while out and about.

The new bins have a section for recycling plastic bottles and drinks cans and a section for normal waste which can't be recycled, such as crisp packets and takeaway containers. The bins also have a grate on top for cigarette butts to encourage people not to throw theirs on the floor.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "Residents are already recycling their waste at home so we hope this will encourage them to recycle on the go as well.

"It's important that we all do our bit for the environment and take pride in our surroundings. If you drop litter on the ground - including cigarette butts - you could face a fine and it doesn't look very nice. In addition, general litter ends up in landfill but space is rapidly running out and the space that is left is hugely expensive so please bear this in mind."

The bins will be located along High Road, High Street and Sparrows Herne in Bushey and High Street and Darkes Lane in Potters Bar and they are being installed following the success of other recycle on the go schemes in Borehamwood and Radlett.

Money for the bins has come from specific funding for improving recycling services and enhancing town centres.
