Recycling Officer Gemma Godfrey has pitched up at community events over the last few months promoting the benefits of recycling and the council's new kerbside collection scheme which will include glass, cartons and a wider range of plastics.

Residents who dropped by the road shows were entered into a free prize draw for completing a short survey on their recycling habits.  Winners were picked at random for an array of prizes including a Brazil and Portugal World Cup football shirt made from recycled plastic bottles, an eco kettle, an iPod dock DAB digital clock radio and rechargeable battery packs.

And the winners include:

  • Benjamin Gruneberg from Borehamwood won the Portugal shirt
  • Zoe and Sophia Michael from Borehamwood will share the Brazil shirt
  • Mr Heaps from Borehamwood won a rechargeable battery pack
  • Stuart Nagler from Radlett won a rechargeable battery pack
  • Ed Sullivan from Potters Bar won a rechargeable battery pack
  • Janet Hawes from Potters Bar won a rechargeable battery pack

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "Our recycling officer goes to community events to promote the many, easy ways you can reduce your waste and recycle more.  Congratulations go to all the winners, I hope the competitions have helped highlight the importance of reducing and recycling our waste.

"These events also give residents an opportunity to talk about any queries they have about recycling and then this information is brought back to the office to help us improve our services."

Remember, plastic bottles, cardboard, cans and foil as well as newspapers and magazines can be recycled through your kerbside collections or taken to a local recycling bank or Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC).  Glass bottles and jars are not included yet, so these should be taken to your local bank or HWRC until the new scheme starts soon.

HWRCs are located at:

  • Allum Lane, Elstree
  • Cranborne Road, Potters Bar
  • Wiggenhall Road, Watford
