Sprucing up Shenley Road

A team of grimebusters are making their way through Shenley Road in Borehamwood to make it cleaner, greener and safer.

Rubbish dumped around large euro bins behind shops and flats in part of the road has already been removed by environmental health and street scene officers from Hertsmere Borough Council this week.  And they will be monitoring the area closely and taking action on anyone found to be dumping rubbish there.

Gavin Burns, Environmental Health Officer, explained: "There are trade waste bins as well as domestic waste bins in this area so it can be difficult to know where the rubbish has come from.  Now the rubbish has gone and the bins clearly labelled, we will keep a close eye on it and prosecute anyone who dumps rubbish there."

The team will take on a section of the road at a time to clear it of any rubbish and liaise with local businesses to check if they have appropriate arrangements to dispose of their waste - known as a trade waste contract which they have to have by law.  We will also write to the occupants of the flats to make sure they know what they should be doing with their waste before any enforcement action is taken.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "We don't want to take action on anyone who is unclear as to how to get rid of their rubbish so the idea is to inform, monitor and then enforce if necessary.

"We hope this approach will encourage local people to take pride in where they live and work."
