Tree-rific tree-cycling!

Nearly 200 real Christmas trees have been shredded and recycled thanks to local residents - the highest number since tree shredding began in the borough five years ago.

Over four days, the council - in partnership with our grounds maintenance contractor John O'Conner - has put on shredding sessions at car parks across the borough to make it easy for residents to recycle their real trees.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "This is great news for the environment and a brilliant start to recycling in 2012 so I'd like to say thank you to everyone who brought their tree along."

Trees were put through a shredding machine on site and then taken away to be mixed with other materials to make mulch which is put on shrub beds throughout the parks in the borough to help keep weeds down and moisture in the ground.

Cllr Heywood added: "If you still need to get rid of your real Christmas tree, you can take it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre at Allum Lane in Elstree or at Cranborne Road in Potters Bar.  Alternatively chop it up and put it in your green bin.  I hope recycling more waste is one of everyone's New Year's resolutions!"

Please remove all decorations from your tree before you recycle it.

48 trees were shredded at Kemp Place car park in Bushey on Thursday, 19 at The Venue car park in Borehamwood on Friday, 49 at Oakmere car park in Potters Bar on Saturday, and 63 at Newberries car park in Radlett on Sunday, making a grand total of 179.

Throughout January, Christmas cards can be recycled at any Asda, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s or TK Maxx - or drop them in one of our special bins at:

  • Reception at Civic Offices, Borehamwood
  • Kemp Place car park or Costco car park, Bushey
  • Furzefield centre car park, Potters Bar
  • Newberries car park, Radlett
  • Andrews Close, Shenley

Please do not put Christmas cards in your green bin or blue box.
