Batteries included!

You can now recycle domestic batteries at special boxes throughout Hertsmere.

Batteries should not be put in your normal waste as they are made from metals that are toxic and when they are thrown into landfill, the dangerous metals can seep into the ground water and eventually into the food chain potentially harming humans and wildlife.  If they are recycled, the metals including lead, zinc and lithium, can be reused.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "Only about three per cent of batteries are recycled in Britain so we hope these boxes will encourage residents to dispose of them responsibly."
