Compost Awareness Week gives food for thought

It's 'food for thought' between 3 and 9 May as Hertsmere encourages residents to get involved with home composting.
Hertsmere Borough Council is supporting Compost Awareness Week with events across the borough to show how we can all make a difference with compost.
A roadshow, with a composting advisor and recycling officer, will be oustide Tally Ho on Darkes Lane in Potters Bar between 11am and 2pm on Wednesday 29 April and oustide Superdrug on Shenley Road, Borehamwood between 11am and 2pm on Friday 1 May.
The council is also giving away free compost between 8.45am and 2pm on Wednesday 6 May at Newberries car park in Radlett. "Come along to see what the garden and kitchen waste you recycle looks like when it's composted," is the message from Environment Portfolio Holder, Cllr Jean Heywood.
"We can all make a difference by composting our own household kitchen and garden waste, or making the 'greener choice' of peat-free composts containing recycled materials.
"Up to one third of a household's waste can be recycled by composting at home. This includes fruit and vegetable peelings, shredded or scrunched up paper, cardboard, pet hair and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner.
"Promoting home composting is a good way to encourage our residents to be responsible with their waste. Not only does home composting divert waste from landfill sites, where it can give off methane contributing to global warming, it creates a useful product for the garden which nourishes plants and flowers.
"By spreading the word - and your green waste - we can all make a difference by diverting waste from landfill sites and put it to good use in our own gardens."
To collect the free compost you need to bring along an empty compost bag or rubble sack to the event in Radlett. Compost will be issued on a first come, first served basis and is limited to two bags per household.
