Do you have too much garden waste?
11-Jun-2010 14:53:26
Special sacks are now available to residents who find their green/brown bin overflows at this time of year.
The sacks are for excess garden waste only, such as grass clippings, and should be put out alongside your green/brown bin on your scheduled collection day.
Food waste and cardboard should continue to go in your green/brown bin and the sacks shouldn't be filled more than five days before your scheduled collection.
The sacks cost 50p each and are available from:
- The Venue Leisure Centre, Elstree Way, Borehamwood
- Bushey Country Club, High Street, Bushey
- Bushey Grove Leisure Centre, Aldenham Road, Bushey
- The Furzefield Leisure Centre, Mutton Lane, Potters Bar
- Wyllyotts Theatre, Darkes Lane, Potters Bar
- Aldenham Parish Council at The Radlett Centre, Aldenham Avenue, Radlett
Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder at Hertsmere Borough Council, said: "We've introduced these sacks to make it easier for residents to recycle their garden waste during the summer when more of it is produced.
"So if you fill up your green/brown bin when you're cutting the grass and gardening, use one of our bags or alternatively you can take it to a Household Waste Recycling Centre."
HWRCs are located at:
- Allum Lane, Elstree
- Cranborne Road, Potters Bar
- Wiggenhall Road, Watford
What you can put in the sacks:
- Grass clippings
- Flowers, leaves and weeds
- Fallen garden fruit
- Hedge/tree trimmings
- Twigs and small branches
- Straw/hay
- Bedding and waste from any vegetarian pet
What you can't put in the sacks:
- Soil, or soil with turf attached
- Stones and rubble
- Treated wood e.g. fence panels, painted doors, furniture
- Cat litter and dog faeces
- Paper and plastic e.g. plant pots, bags, tags, furniture
Special bio bags for collecting food waste in a kitchen caddy before putting it in your green/brown bin are also available from the above places for £2.50 for 52. Kitchen caddies are available for free from the Civic Offices, Elstree Way, Borehamwood, Bushey Area Office at The Bushey Centre in the High Street, and Potters Bar Area Office at The Wyllyotts Centre in Darkes Lane, as well as Aldenham Parish Council at The Radlett Centre.
