Hertsmere Borough Council, in partnership with the Friends of King George Recreation Ground, has installed three pieces of special outdoor fitness equipment at the park to promote healthy living and leisure opportunities.

The weatherproof equipment - a bike and step machine, a double air walker and an arm rotation unit - is intended for adults of any age and up to six people can use it at any one time.  The equipment is not suitable for under 14s.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder with responsibility for parks, said: "The equipment is brilliant, it's like being in a real gym but with the beautiful surroundings of the park and there's no cost whatsoever.

"The equipment is ideal for those who don't want to join a gym and prefer to exercise outside.  Using the equipment can help improve your mental and physical health and can reduce the risk of some cancers, heart disease and stroke.

"You can meet with friends or make new ones and you can use the equipment at any time of day.  All the equipment is easy to use and it's really good fun!"

Mike Shrives, Chairman of the Friends of King George Recreation Ground, said: "We were delighted to support the council in providing outdoor fitness equipment for adults in the park.

"I agree that it is easy to use and it might be something that older people want to use for exercise."

It is hoped the equipment will help retain the park's Green Flag, the national award for parks and green spaces, which it has held for the last 10 years.  Judging took place in May and the results are due at the end of July.

The equipment is located near to La Dolce Vita Cafe.
