Hertsmere gets new banks for old glass

Recycling banks throughout the borough are having a makeover.
New glass recycling banks are being installed at all 14 local recycling sites in Hertsmere.
Taking your empty bottles and jars to a glass recycling bank will really help reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. Residents can recycle just about everything through our kerbside collections except glass as our waste vehicles aren't designed to carry it. All the recycling sites are easy to get to and conveniently sited so it's simple to take your empties with you when you pop to the shops.
All you have to do is put the right colour of glass in each bank - there's one for clear, green and brown glass - and remember that any glass placed on the floor around the banks will not be recycled and sent to landfill. The banks will be emptied regularly by contractors but if one is full, please call 020 8207 7480.
Glass is perfect for recycling - you can recycle it back into new bottles and jars over and over again and there is increasing demand for products made from recycled glass. Making new products from old materials is a better use of our limited resources and saves energy which contributes to a cleaner, greener more sustainable environment for you and future generations.
The banks are for glass bottles and jars only - kitchenware, such as Pyrex and drinking glasses, spectacles, sheet glass and mirrors should not be put in.
Hertsmere's Recycling Officer, Gemma Godfrey, said: "The new glass banks look great and I hope residents will make good use of them.
"As we can't currently collect glass with other household waste and recycling, it's important that residents are able to recycle it in an easy and convenient way at the recycling banks.
"Recycling your glass will reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill which is really crucial at the moment as landfill space is rapidly running out."
All the banks have been replaced apart from those in Potters Bar and at Borehamwood Shopping Park.
