Residents can now recycle even more of their household rubbish with the introduction of a carton recycling scheme throughout the borough.

Hertsmere recycling officer Gemma Godfrey recycles her cartons at one of the new bins
New recycling bins for paper-based liquid food and drink cartons, such as those used for fruit juice, have been installed at five recycling sites in Hertsmere in conjunction with Tetra Pak Ltd and the carton industry body ACE UK (Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment).
The bins are at:
- Kemp Place car park, Kemp Place, Bushey
- Newberries car park, Watling Street, Radlett
- The Venue car park, Elstree Way, Borehamwood
- Andrews Close, off Porters Park Drive, Shenley
- Tesco, Mutton Lane, Potters Bar
This scheme means that cartons can now be recycled in Hertsmere instead of being put in the normal household waste and sent to landfill. Cartons should be washed and squashed before being placed in the bins. Unfortunately they still can't go in kerbside recycling collections as our recycling plants can't accept them yet.
Once the cartons are collected from the sites they will be taken away to be baled and transported to a recycling mill in Europe until facilities are available in the UK. They can be recycled into a number of different products, ranging from plasterboard liner to high-strength paper bags and envelopes.
Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "The majority of residents have shown they are passionate about recycling so I'm pleased we are involved in this project so we can recycle even more of our waste."
Richard Hands, Environment Manager at Tetra Pak Ltd and Chairman of ACE UK, said: "Whilst cartons have been successfully recycled in large volumes for many years throughout Europe, the UK has a long way to go. We and our industry partners are committed to increasing the level of carton recycling in the UK with the aim of reaching a national network of carton collection by the end of 2008. Our work with Hertsmere Borough Council takes us one step closer to achieving that."
