A scheme aimed at providing clean and safe public toilet facilities in Borehamwood's town centre is being launched in October.

The Community Toilet Scheme aims to develop a partnership between the council and local businesses to enable members of the public to use their toilet facilities during opening hours.

The council is keen to hear from other businesses willing to make their facilities available to the public. In return, the companies participating will receive between £600 and £1,000 a year from the council, depending on the facilities open to the public. Businesses with only one unisex toilet receive £600 increasing to £1,000 for premises with separate male and female toilets, disabled toilets and baby changing facilities.

Special window stickers will be used to sign the toilets participating in the scheme and a map will be produced to highlight the locations around Borehamwood.

Andrew Weaver, Head of Housing and Health, said: "We have all been in the position when we need to find a public toilet - whether for ourselves or perhaps our children - and we hope this scheme will eventually provide a network of clean and safe toilets that are readily accessible for shoppers in Borehamwood.

"We are delighted to be launching this scheme and I know that it is something the local community want. Not only do shoppers benefit, but participating businesses also stand to benefit as more people become aware of their premises and come in. If the scheme is successful then we hope to be able to launch the scheme across the borough."
