Street scene forum visit new destination

Members of Hertsmere’s Street Scene forum were given a guided tour of the new destination for the borough’s green waste.

The forum visited Envar in Woodhurst, Cambridgeshire on Friday to see what happens at the site. Previously Hertsmere’s green waste was taken to West London Composting in Harefield, Middlesex which meant a 56-mile round trip. Following a tender process Hertsmere’s green waste, food waste, cardboard and paper waste now goes to Envar which is much closer and saves 28 miles a week, per vehicle.

Cllr Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for environment, explained: "It was really interesting to learn more about what happens at Envar and to see the processes that our recycling goes through when it gets there. I hope it was informative and useful for the forum."

Members of the waste forum who went on the visit were:
Cllr Jean Heywood, portfolio holder for environment., Steve burton, head of waste and street scene, Gemma Godfrey, recycling officer, Alex Holloway, waste operations manager,  Tony Alexander and Barry Surridge, waste operatives, Gill Balen and Elizabeth Wackrow, Aldenham Parish Council, Margaret Ohren, Potters Bar in Focus, Cllr Anita Gamble, and Robert Gamble, Bushey resident.

Envar is a waste management and recycling company specialising in organic waste and market/product development
