Hazardous waste
Hazardous waste classification and collection.
What is Hazardous Waste?
Some wastes are harmful to human health or to the environment, either immediately or over an extended period of time. These are called hazardous wastes.
If you are a householder,
If your business produces hazardous waste you have a 'duty of care' to make sure it's disposed of properly.
Hazardous waste is waste that is dangerous to people, the environment or animals. Hazardous materials include such items as fluorescent tubes, oils, some paints, car batteries, televisions, computer monitors, and fridges/freezers.
How should I dispose of these items as a householder?
As a business, how can I dispose of these items?
Disposal of Hazardous Waste is goverened by the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005. This means that residents requesting bulky waste collections are asked to identify any Hazardous materials for a separate collection.
Additionally, businesses that produce this waste must be registed with the Environment Agency, unless they are classed as exempt. Businesses are legally responsible for the disposal of hazardous waste produced and therefore need to check that the waste disposal company they use is registered to carry hazardous waste. As a consequence businesses that use our trade waste service will no longer be able to dispose of Hazardous items, as part of a special collection. Therefore, businesses that use our service and would like to dispose of hazardous waste items will need to contact companies that can dispose of their hazardous waste.
