Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) are open to members of the public and operated by Hertfordshire County Council.

HWRCs are open all year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day. The following sites are in Hertsmere:

Allum Lane, Elstree, WD6 3LS
Open all year, Mon-Fri 8am-4pm and Sat-Sun 9am-4pm

Cranborne Road, Potters Bar, EN6 3JN
Open daily: Summer 8am-6pm and winter 8am-4pm
Summer time run from 1 April - 30 Sept
Winter times run from 1 Oct - 31 March


As well as general rubbish, a wide range of recyclables are accepted at the sites including:

  • Foil
  • Batteries (domestic and car)
  • Cans
  • Cardboard
  • Cartons
  • Electrical items e.g. kettles, hair dryers, fairy lights
  • Fluorescent lighting tubes and low energy light bulbs
  • Fridges/freezers
  • Glass
  • Garden waste
  • Metals
  • Mobile phones
  • Oil (cooking and engine)
  • Ovens/hobs
  • Paper
  • Plasterboard *
  • Plastic (rigid) e.g. yoghurt pots, microwave meal trays, butter tubs *
  • Plastic bottles
  • Shoes
  • Textiles
  • Toner cartridges
  • TVs and monitors
  • Tyres
  • White goods e.g. washing machines
  • Wood

* Recycling facilities for these items are not available at the Allum Lane site.
