Additional Bin Collections
Our waste and recycling scheme explained.
Hertsmere makes collections from your properties on the same day every week and we encourage everyone to recycle as much of their waste as possible.
Every house should have a black wheelie bin, a green/brown wheelie bin, a blue box and a black box.
- On Week 1 we collect your black wheelie bin and black box.
- On Week 2 (the same day the following week) we collect your green/brown wheelie bin and blue box.

And so it goes on… alternating each week between black bin and box collections, and green bin and blue box collections the following week.
See below for all the details on what you can and cannot recycle, but rememeber, your food waste can still be collected on a weekly basis simply by using the black and green bins on alternate weeks.
What goes in each box/bin?
- Your black bin is for refuse you cannot recycle.
- Your black box is for plastic and cans.
- Your green/brown bin is for garden waste.
- Your blue box is for newspapers and paper.
To explain further:
What goes in your black bin?
All the refuse you cannot recycle. Although you can recycle much of your food waste by using your green or brown bin, you can still put your food waste in your black bin to ensure it is collected weekly.
What goes in your black box?
Your black box is for plastic and cans. Plastics marked with a 1, 2 or 3 triangle can be placed in here.
What goes in your green/brown bin?
Garden waste, food waste, and cardboard are all accepted.
What goes in your blue box?
Newspapers, magazines and paper.
