Over two million smokers (one in six) are expected to get serious about stopping on this year’s No Smoking Day, Wednesday 14 March 2007, making it the biggest in the campaign’s 24 year history.

Millions more will take the opportunity to find out about the help available for when they are ready to stop smoking. The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Make a Fresh Start’ and events are being held across the UK.

With the smokefree legislation coming into force in the summer, many smokers will use No Smoking Day as their opportunity to quit smoking. Seven out of ten smokers say they want to give up smoking and could use the support available on No Smoking Day.

Smokers in Hertsmere already have access to world class help and support from the Hertfordshire Stop Smoking Service. The free help provided by the Hertfordshire Stop Smoking Service can improve the chance of stopping successfully by up to four times. For more information about the help on offer call Freephone 0800 389 3 998 between 9am and 5 pm. Sessions are held in the morning, afternoons and evenings, both group and one-to-one clinics.

A specialist stop smoking session also exists for pregnant women in Hertfordshire. The service is also open to partners and families of pregnant women and new mums who wish to quit smoking. The programme is run on a confidential, informal, flexible, one-to-one basis with appointments taking place in the client's home where requested.

Ben Youdan, Chief Executive of No Smoking Day, the charity behind the annual health awareness campaign, says: “Good luck to all smokers in Hertsmere who are serious about improving their health in the best way possible this No Smoking Day. Stopping smoking is the ultimate lifestyle overhaul. You’ll feel fitter and healthier and have more energy and more money! Using the help provided by Hertfordshire Stop Smoking Service can make it four times more likely that you will succeed. Good luck.”
