Renewable energy in the home

If you are interested in renewable energy in your home, you may be able to apply for a grant to help towards costs.

There is now a national scheme available for homeowners and community groups which is aimed at encouraging the use of renewable energy.

Low carbon buildings programme

The government department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform has introduced a low carbon buildings programme Logo indicating an external web link which provides grants for microgeneration technologies for householders, community organisations, schools, the public sector and businesses.

What is Microgeneration?

Microgeneration is the stand-alone generation of low carbon heat and/or electricity. Householders can apply for grants of up to £2,500 per property towards the cost of installing a certified product by a certified installer.

What types of renewable energy will the grant cover?

Grants are given to the following renewable energy installations:

  • Solar thermal
  • Wind turbines
  • Micro/small scale hydro turbines
  • Ground source heat pumps
  • Room heaters/stoves with automated wood pellet feed
  • Wood fuelled boiler systems
