If you are suffering Domestic Violence from someone you live with, it is important that you are aware of your rights and the services that you can access.
If you are experiencing domestic violence, it can be a difficult time and often one of the main obstacles is knowing where to go and what services and advice are available to you. The information below is not intended as a comprehensive list but will give you an idea about where to start.

Who can advise me on my rights?
Solicitors
You should contact a solicitor who will be able to give you legal advice on your current situation, there are many local solicitors listed in the phone book. The solicitor will also be able to give you advice and help on the following:
- Advice on whether you are entitled to legal aid to help with the cost.
- Discuss with you whether it is appropriate to get an injunction order to stop the perpetrator contacting you or coming near you.
- Discuss with you whether it is appropriate to get a, ouster order to make the perpetrator leave the home and get you back in the property. This can and will only be done on your request.
The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)
The Citizens Advice Bureau can help to advise you on your rights and guide you towards other sources of help. The Hersmere CAB offices are located in:

The Police
The Domestic Violence Liaison Officer at your local police station can also provide support and advice. A confidential meeting, or phone advice is offered to any victim of domestic violence who wishes to seek information on how to deal with their situation.
You don't have to give your name. You will be given details of how Police, Social Services and other agencies such as Solicitors and Housing Departments may be able to assist with your situation, and their contact numbers.
The council
The Homeless Persons Unit at Hertsmere Borough Council can advise you on your tenancy rights and give advice and help with re-housing. The Housing benefits department will also be able to give you advice on claiming benefit and what you would be entitled to.

Where Can I Go?
If you are a Housing Association Tenant, your Landlord may be able to help you move. The two largest Housing Association landlords in Hertsmere are William Sutton
