Unofficial knocking in Hertsmere

Residents in Hertsmere should be aware of unofficial salespeople operating in the area, who say they are working with the council.

Hertsmere Borough Council has received complaints from residents about cold callers, who claim to be affiliated to the council, arriving on their doorstep unannounced and trying to get them to sign up for cavity wall and loft insulation.

Although the council is involved with the Herts Essex Energy Partnership (HEEP), which offers homeowners and private landlords the opportunity to get discounts on cavity wall and loft insulation as well as heating systems, representatives from the scheme will never cold-call.

Anyone working in conjunction with the council doesn't just turn up at your door - you would always receive a letter or phone call beforehand so an appointment can be made.

Councillor Jean Heywood, Environment Portfolio Holder, said: "There are lots of legitimate door-to-door salespeople who visit people's homes to build up their business.  However, residents should be vigilant, and not necessarily believe a person who turns up at their door is who they say they are.  If they do not have an appointment and ID badge don't invite them in."

If you are unsure about the authenticity of anyone calling at your door, please call 020 8207 7435 or email environmental.health@hertsmere.gov.uk
