And although Hertsmere’s Young Researchers were piped at the post in the Citygate Young People of the Year Awards (Yopeys) they were treated to an evening out at a special ceremony on Monday.
The Young Researchers – seven teenagers from Hertsmere aged 14 to 19 - undertook a unique piece of research into the media portrayal of young people, gangs and knife crime. Hertsmere Borough Council worked in partnership with Youth Connexions to support the project and the researchers to explore how young people are represented in the media and if stereotyping existed. Evidence was gathered on a number of different topics including media representation of youth trends over the past 100 years, knife crime statistics and media reports of knife crime.
Tony Gearing, founder of the Yopeys, said: "The project by Hertsmere’s Young Researchers really struck a chord with me as it looked at issues which spawned these awards in the first place – the negative portrayal of young people in the media. I was very interested to learn about their work and not surprised that it highlighted that negative stereotyping still exists.
"The group should be very proud of their achievements and this piece of work."
Cllr Brenda Batten, Leisure, Culture and Health portfolio holder, said: "I was delighted to learn that the group had been shortlisted for the award and although they did not win, it is a great achievement and we are all really proud of them. I have worked closely with young people during my teaching career and can say first-hand that the majority are great individuals and are our ambassadors for the future.
"We send our very best wishes and congratulations to the winners, and all the finalists, who were all worthy nominees."
The group was given a surprise runners-up prize of £50 towards their work. The ceremony took place on Monday, 26 September, at Bushey Country Club and was sponsored by Bushey VW retailer Citygate as well as Borehamwood food importer Donatantonio and Potters Bar insurer Canada Life.
