Want to be the next Ronaldo? Fancy finding out what it takes to be a fireman? Want to get fit over the summer? Then young people should get their hands on a copy of the council's new and improved summer activities programme. Young people aged 11 to 19 years old have got loads of tailor-made activities to choose from over the summer holidays in a fun-packed programme which is now split into three different age groups.

As a direct result from consultation with young people themselves, 'Be There! Do It!' will remain the title of the programme for 11 to 13 year olds, 'Gmooh' - Get me Out of Here! will be the name of the programme for 13 to 16 year olds and 'i:meet' will be the title for the programme specifically designed for older teenagers aged 16 to 19 years old.

The consultation with over 70 young people took place in May at a youth conference held in the council's Chamber.  Young people expressed a desire to take part in activities for specific age groups as an 11-year-old will probably have different interests and capabilities to a 19-year-old and often older teenagers don't want to hang around with younger children.

For five weeks of the school summer holiday, young people can choose from an action packed programme covering sports, arts, life skills, recreation and fun.  Activities include football coaching, horse riding, learning how to fish, golf camp, free swimming, youth gym sessions and inductions, urban street dance, graffiti and fashion design workshops, cookery, car restoration, a 1-day firefighter experience and just simply chillin' at a barbecue!

Most activities are available to each age group but will be designed appropriately for the three different age ranges and allow young people to mix and make friends with others of a similar age.  Some activities are free and others have to be paid for but are at a reasonable rate and open to both residents and non-residents of the borough.  In addition, some activities will need to be booked and others young people can just turn up at.  Spaces are limited on some activities so book early to avoid disappointment.

To book an activity or request a brochure please call 020 8207 7568.  Payments can be made by credit or debit card over the phone, or by cheque.  The brochure can also be downloaded from this website.

FREE HERT CARD
Young people aged 14 to 17 years old who live in the borough can also take advantage of Hertsmere Leisure facilities with a free Hert Card available through the Be There! Do It! summer programme 2007.  The Hert card entitles the holder to reduced prices on off-peak activities such as badminton, swimming and junior fitness sessions.
