An exciting new sports programme has been launched for young people across the borough.
The Twilight sports programme will offer a range of activities late in the evening for young people aged between 15 and 19 years old. The scheme is funded by Herts Sports Partnership and is coordinated by Hertsmere Borough Council in conjunction with Hertsmere Leisure and Hertfordshire Constabulary.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage young people to become more active and give them something to do in the evening. The scheme is being piloted in Borehamwood and so far twenty young people are attending football sessions on a Monday night at the Hertswood Centre between 10pm and 11pm.
Following the success of this six-week pilot which ends in February, the scheme will be extended in Borehamwood and piloted for six weeks in Potters Bar and Bushey for an hour on a weekday evening.
Activities will include netball and basketball as well as football and are free during the pilot schemes and will cost £1 a session thereafter. There is no need to book, young people can attend as and when they want to.
Each activity will be led by local community coaches who will organise each session so young people can play sport, make friends and have a good time.
Councillor Brenda Batten, Culture and Health Portfolio Holder, attended the first session in Borehamwood. She said: "It was great to see so many young people take advantage of this fantastic scheme and have such a great time playing sport. I hope the pilot projects are as successful in Potters Bar and Bushey.
"Special thanks should be extended to all partners but particularly the Herts Sports Partnership who have funded this exciting initiative."
