Bushey Museum and Art Gallery has just been officially ‘Accredited’ by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).

The Museum's collections and displays tell the story of Bushey with an emphasis on the unique artistic history of the area. They include works by members of the Monro Circle which flourished in the early 19th century. The Museum has a large collection (considered to be of national significance) of works and artefacts relating to Sir Hubert von Herkomer RA and his famous School of Art in Bushey which, a century ago, was attracting students from all over the world. Also well represented are Lucy Kemp-Welch and other artists who, up to the present day, have been drawn to Bushey by its reputation.

Bushey's social history is illustrated through historical maps, displays of archaeology from earliest times to the present day, examples of the wide range of products made in Bushey and displays on life in the village.

The Museum Accreditation Scheme sets nationally agreed standards for all museums in the UK. Bushey Museum and Art Gallery’s award proves that it measures up, meeting the guidelines on how it is run, how it looks after its collections and the services it provides its visitors.

Cllr Brenda Batten, portfolio holder for cultural services, said: "We are delighted that Bushey Museum and Art Gallery has been recognised with this accreditation. A tremendous amount of work has gone in to achieving this and being acknowledged in this way makes it worthwhile for everyone involved.

“Our museums have a lot to offer and I hope that people will be encouraged to come along and enjoy the experience for themselves.”

Mark Wood, Chair of MLA, said: “Being awarded Accreditation is an impressive achievement. It recognises the high standard and service that Bushey Museum and Art Gallery provides and acknowledges the hard work of the staff. Many congratulations!”

Bushey opening times: Thursday to Sunday, 11am to 4pm.
