Young people who feel there's nothing to do during the summer holidays can stop complaining right now. There's plenty to do in Hertsmere and it all kicks off on Wednesday 1st August - National Play Day.

The event will run from 12 noon to 3pm at the green flag awarded Oakmere Park in Potters Bar and there'll be lots of free activities for everyone to enjoy including face painting, badge making and the shokk gym (for 11-16 year olds). Mr Marvel, magician and puppeteer, will also be on hand from 1pm to 2.30pm to entertain the younger children.

Activities for under 19's continue throughout the summer holidays and across the borough with the council's award winning summer play scheme for five to 11 year olds and the action packed summer programme for 11 to 19 year olds.

The aim of National Play Day is to simply promote children's right to play. The national theme for this year's event is 'Our streets too!' which aims to encourage children to reclaim the streets for play where it is safe to do so. Police are attending the event with the police trailer and will be handing out free mobile phone hands free car sets and personal attack alarms. The fire service will be on site highlighting fire safety and the Red Cross will be there to highlight first aid.

Hertsmere's Play Strategy will also be launched on the day. This is a new document which will form a bid to the National Lottery for funding to improve play opportunities within the borough.
