Ridge
Ridge village lies between Shenley and South Mimms.
The village was part of the manor of Tyttenhanger, and, as its name suggests, stands high on a ridge 400ft above sea level with fine views over the countryside. It retains a true village atmosphere with several old timber-framed buildings, two farm barns and former almshouses built in 1844.
The parish church of St Margaret's was built by the Abbots of St Albans. An original wayside chapel dating from the 14th century now forms part of the chancel while the nave and tower were added in the 15th century.
Inside, visitors can find a fine 15th century wall painting depicting St Christopher, distinguished modern glass and furniture by Thompson of Kilburn, better known as the 'mouse man'.
Ridge parish includes the Grade I Tyttenhanger House, Hertsmere's finest listed building and former seat of the Earls of Caledon. Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis (younger son of the Earl of Caledon) is buried in St Margaret's churchyard.
A bridge over the M25 links Ridge with the larger village of South Mimms one mile to the north-east.
