Town Twinning

Town Twinning developed mainly after the Second World War to promote mutual understanding and friendship.

The original idea behind town twinning was to promote movement across Europe to preserve peace and understanding between nations. Today, with greater mobility all around the globe, this has translated into the development of mutual understanding between countries. Over the past 30 years, Hertsmere’s towns have developed particularly strong links with their counterparts in France and Germany.

Borehamwood and Elstree are twinned with Fontenay-aux-Roses, near Paris, and Offenburg in Germany.

Bushey and Landsberg-am-Lech have a cultural and educational exchange agreement. The affinity of the two towns is strengthened by links with Bushey’s famous artist, von Herkomer.

Potters Bar is twinned with Viernheim in Germany and Franconville in France. The Potters Bar Town Twinning Association slotted into a three way twinning as its twins, Viernheim and Franconville, were already paired. Click here to visit the Potters Bar Town Twinning Association webpage.

The Parish of Aldenham (including Radlett) is twinned with Gemeinde Lautertal of Germany and Louveciennes of France.
