List of Locally Important Buildings in Hertsmere

The Council has now finalised its List of Locally Important Buildings. The buildings included in the document are locally listed and will receive extra protection through the planning process.

Some of the locally listed buildings

Locally listed buildings are important buildings or structures of historical or architectural interest to the local community. Although they may not be of sufficient merit to be designated as Grade I, II* or II buildings on the statutory list, they can still have an important role in defining the character and appearance of an area.

The Hertsmere Local Plan states that locally listed buildings are those buildings or structures of local architectural or historic interest that contribute to a streetscape or rural landscape, or that may be of interest because of an historic connection or some other local community significance.

The Council, with the help of the Hertfordshire Building Preservation Trust, has now finalised its List of Locally Important Buildings. Over 200 nominations to the List were submitted by the public; and a survey of the Borough, alongside consultation with other groups, resulted in 707 individual buildings or structures on 380 different sites being included onto the draft List.

After further consultation on this draft, the final List has been narrowed down to 372 entries. These entries comprise a wide range of buildings, monuments and other structures, from a Sir Norman Foster designed house that was used in the filming of 'A Clockwork Orange' to a 19th century building that was originally used to house old Boreham Wood's National School.

The List of Locally Important Buildings identifies these buildings and structures so that they can be afforded extra protection through the planning process. Whilst the level of protection will not be as strong as that given to Grade I, II* or II statutorily listed buildings, there will be additional protection insofar as planning controls allow. This means that there will be a presumption against the demolition and redevelopment of buildings and structures on the list, and an additional basis for the Council to reject poorly designed or unsympathetic extensions and external alterations.

The final List can be viewed at the Council's Civic Offices, or Bushey or Potters Bar Area Offices, or at any of the libraries in the Borough.

Alternatively the List can be downloaded below. Please note that, although the document has been divided into several sections, each section is large and may take some time to download.

Although the List of Locally Important Buildings is now finalised, you can still nominate your building to be considered when the List is next reviewed. Please email local.plan@hertsmere.gov.uk or write to the Policy and Transport Team at:
