Rural Development
All of Hertsmere’s land outside of the main towns is in the Green Belt. Although there is a need to support the diversification of the rural economy, it is essential to ensure that the open nature, visual qualities and other important attributes of the Green Belt are maintained.
Government policy on rural development is outlined in two key policy documents:
- Planning Policy Guidance Note (PPG) 2: Green Belts and
- Planning Policy Statement (PPS) 7: Sustainable Development in Rural Areas.
The Local Plan contains policies guiding development in the Countryside.
