Boost to Borehamwood businesses

Planning controls in and around Elstree Way are set to be simplified in a bid to help new and existing businesses and regenerate the area.

The council is currently consulting on a Local Development Order (LDO) which would allow certain works to go ahead at commercial properties without the need for planning permission.  These include some rear and side extensions, new and replacement windows and entrance features - all of which would normally be expected to receive planning permission.  It is hoped it will also encourage the installation of solar panels which is an environmentally friendly way to create electricity.  However, it would not give a green light to developments that could have a negative impact on the area.

Councillor Hannah David, Planning Portfolio Holder, said: "The LDO will basically make it easier for businesses to make small-scale improvements to their properties as it will reduce the requirement for planning permission in certain situations.  In turn, this will save time and money for themselves and the council.

"We hope it will also help enhance the area as well as attract new investment and retain existing businesses, which is so very important in the current economic climate.  However, the LDO will not permit works that wouldn’t normally get permission in the first place."

Hertsmere is one of a handful of councils working on a LDO, which would affect the 'Elstree Way Corridor' - the majority of Elstree Way and some of Manor Way and Studio Way.
