Changes to household planning rules

News Item Details

Date
2.13pm, 16 September 2008

Did you know that from October you may be able to extend or add to your home without applying for planning permission, provided you meet a new set of limits and conditions? And if you are carrying out electrical work in your home or garden you will have to follow new rules in the building regulations?

New rules for householders relating to planning permission and building regulations will take effect from 1 October 2008.   But don't worry, many of your questions will be answered within an online planning portal This is an external link which outlines guidance for common household projects.

If you have Flash software, you can use the interactive house guide which explains the new and existing rules in an accessible and user-friendly way.  You can download the software for free via a plug-in from Adobe or alternatively view a text only version.

For specific advice please contact the council before you start work as the new rules and guidelines might not apply to your house and even if you do not require planning permission it is often advisable to obtain a certificate of lawful development before any works begin to confirm this.  Contact planning on 020 8207 2277 or email planning@hertsmere.gov.uk
